About the "Reparieren macht Schule e.V." (the Fixing Things for the Future Association)
We believe that everyone should be able to be able to experience repairing things! Why? Read more…
Experience and scientific analysis of the world’s first Student Repair Shop at the Munich Rudolf Steiner School Schwabing have both shown that not only do young people learn to get broken things working again and make a valuable contribution to sustainability and climate protection through the process of repairing things – the educational outcomes of repairing things go much further: Repairing things promotes practical life skills, self-confidence, self-efficacy, social learning and the courage to engage with unknown situations.
To encourage as many other schools and other organizations that work with young people as possible to follow suit, we created the handbook “Fixing Things for the Future”>>Link.
And the Reparieren macht Schule e.V. (Fixing Things for the Future Association) was founded to help spread these ideas. The eleven founding members created the association on March 28, 2019. The association was officially entered into Germany’s Registry of Associations June 10 of that year, and officially recognized as a non-profit organization on July 15, 2019.
The association is especially interesting for “disseminators” and decision makers at primary- and secondary educational institutions.
“If you want to save the world, you have to save the things in it” (Niko Paech)
Following this thought from sustainability researcher and the originator of the post-growth approach to the economy, Niko Paech, the association "Reparieren macht Schule” (Fixing Things for the Future) has the concrete goal of providing as many young people and parents as possible with a chance to experience repairing things for themselves. In the process, they may discover that repairing things is often easier than they think, that it's fun to "save things," that they learn a lot of useful life skills, that they gain insight into economic relationships, and that doing so enables them to make a meaningful contribution to reducing waste and conserving resources.
The association’s greater goal is to raise awareness of the fact that repairing things means much more than simply getting broken things to work again: Those who repair things experience a basic human process, because it is only in our recent consumer societies that we even have the option to throw broken things away and to replace them with new ones. All the generations before us depended on using their equipment for as long as possible and repairing it whenever necessary. And who has ever thought about the fact that nature and our own body permanently repair themselves? We think it is worthwhile to focus more attention on this elementary activity once again!
The association mission is to spread the idea of repair, both in schools and through extracurricular activities. We work with teachers, youth centers, the Repair Initiatives Network, and many others.
Projects
Test of an extracurricular concept: The concept is designed to familiarize young people and their parents with the "experience repair” approach and to arouse their interest through a free introductory offer. Those who are interested can then attend an eight-meeting course.
Development of film modules: In cooperation with an experienced filmmaker, we are developing cinematic modules on the topic of "Enabling children and young people to experience repairing things".
Public relations: The association conducts its own public relations work and constantly takes part in public events having to do with repair and sustainability.
